Would you let your life be run by a 4 year old?

So what do you think?  Would you let your life be run by a 4 year old?

Believe it or not, in many ways, you already do!  Because every decision you make or don't make, is driven by one or more beliefs that you hold; and most often you formed those beliefs when you were a very young child.

From the very limited capabilities and filters you had as a child, you made lasting interpretations about events that happened in your life. Those lasting interpretations are what beliefs are made of.

For example, a child whose parents regularly praise her for her good behavior could draw the conclusion that her worth is based on how well she behaves or how well she does something, rather than feeling loveable and worthy no matter what. 

It doesn't matter what the parents are actually feeling or intending.  That conclusion could still be made; and it then becomes a life-time belief unless something happens to change it.  Unfortunately, most often, beliefs of this nature are out of our awareness, or, if not, they still seem very true or very difficult to change.

A belief is simply a judgement or interpretation that you hold as a fixed truth.  When you hold something as true, your mind filters for it, finds it, and therefore you keep "proving" your thinking as a "truth".  Your reality matches what you think and it becomes a self-reinforcing loop.

Your beliefs determine what actions you will/will not take, and how you react to things, as well.  They are the blueprints for what's possible or not possible in your life.  The new scientific field of epigenetics has also discovered that your beliefs actually influence your gene activity!  If a gene is predisposed to a disease, it is more likely to actualize within the environment created by "unhealthy" beliefs - ones that make you feel bad. 

So, beliefs are pretty powerful stuff.  If you have beliefs that support your life in positive ways, they're "keepers"!  But do you think it would be worthwhile to explore and change the ones that don't feel good and that don't empower and enable you to be, do and have what you desire? It IS possible!

What do you do when you get a really bad haircut and have a really bad day?

Joy-filled greetings, and happy March!

I can sincerely say that today.  The other day was another story.  The whole day was a struggle.  I was working on editing our website and the words just wouldn't flow, so it took what seemed like hours to get one page done. And, it didn't save!

Then, later in the afternoon, I went to get my hair cut, and she cut it way too short.  I mean, what 'cha gonna do at that point?  There wasn't even enough hair to fix it.  That evening, each time I passed a mirror, I felt an "ugh".  (Don't worry. That's not me in the picture, and it wasn't that bad. It does capture the feeling, tho'.)

I'm sure you've had days like this before, too.  It happens.  I knew early in the morning that my vibration was a little off, in spite of my meditation.  Yet, I pushed forward anyway, rather than take further steps to improve my state. It seemed "good enough".

So what can you do in these situations?  As I always say, when you can't control or change your outer world, you can at least change your inner one. Here's how I handled it and what followed:
  • I focused on the positives. At least the highlights came out nice; and with all the discounts I had, I didn't pay much for anything. At least it was only one page I lost, and it probably wasn't that great anyway.  (These thoughts by themselves helped a little bit; but not enough.  I needed to do more.)
  • Distraction worked great!  Good thing I had some good TV shows recorded!  I knew tomorrow would be a new day and a fresh start.
  • Next day, before doing anything else, I set my positive intentions for the day and took time to connect to my higher self until I could feel all the love, acceptance and divine perfection, and knew that I was back into a high vibration.  Funny, I couldn't even remember all the things that seemed so bad the day before!

From there, some different perspectives on my hair showed up for me as I moved on with my day.
  • "It's only hair.  It grows back.  This is temporary.  Life could be much, much worse."
  • Is it really that important?  What's my concern - that people will judge me by my hair?  I think I have way more to offer than that!  I am not my hair.
  • When I thought about significant people that I've admired, respected and loved, LOTS, maybe even most of them, didn't have perfect hair, or bodies.  In fact, they weren't perfect, either.  It's allowed!

Exercise is always great for shifting energy and moods, and for activating the brain for some creative thinking and writing.  I got on my elliptical machine right after breakfast with some fun music, and soon began to feel even better.  It occurred to me to do a little tweak of my hair style; and when I looked in the mirror I actually thought, "Hey, that's kinda cute!  I look pretty good!" 

Did I look better on the outside because I felt better on the inside?  I certainly think it was more than just that little "tweak" of styling.  Don't you?  There really is no one reality. Perception is everything.

There's my story of the power of changing your thoughts and managing your vibrational energy, or mood. 

The next time something doesn't quite go your way, do something to shift your energy first. It's more difficult to change your thinking while you're still all triggered and in the midst of it.  Meditate, or play music and dance or exercise, do something physical, or distract yourself with a good movie or show -
something that makes you feel good. Then try "tweaking" your thinking.  Challenge your automatic thoughts and try on some different perspectives; and soon you'll be back in the flow again!  (This entire piece flowed from me in like 5 minutes after I got off of the elliptical!) 

I am SO grateful that I have skills for managing my thoughts and emotions and reconnecting to my higher Self.  It's pretty infrequent that I have a "bad day" or mood anymore; but when it happens, I'm able to shift out of it fairly quickly.  My predominant mood is one of happiness and inner peace; and I've manifested a magnificent life full of dreams fulfilled.

Where is Love?

Joy-filled greetings!

Today I feel inspired to briefly share something from one of my favorite spiritual teachers, "Abraham" (a collective spiritual consciousness channeled through Esther Hicks).  These thoughts on love feel quite profound to me; and I have really enjoyed practicing them.  I think you will, too. (I've paraphrased it a bit.)

"There is a difference between love of self, and love that IS self.
There's a difference between loving me, and BEING me who loves.

When you're "me who loves", it's easy to love that one and that one and that one and that one...
We wouldn't be looking for love of self.  We'd be looking for the self that does love, like "I love loving.  I love the feeling of loving you." 
We would simply be looking for reasons to love. It's the ultimate calling."

New Possibilities for YOU!
  • To me, this opens up my realizing that if I just AM love, then my life will be filled with love, including being loved.
  • And, it's a reminder that, for me, my truest, greatest self, simply put, IS LOVE.  I AM LOVE.  For if I am a physical extension of the infinite Spirit/Universe/Divine, then, of course I AM LOVE! 
  • When you remember and focus on who you are beyond your mere physical bodies, you open up to your infinite potential, and to your greatest potential for living with love and joy, with ease and peace, with perfect health, with desires fulfilled, with abundance and prosperity.

Inspiring news!

A happy hello to you!

I have been saying for years that we are engaged in a planetary turning point, moving towards better and better through spiritual awakening. With so much in the media focused on the crises at hand, it can be hard to see our evolution in process. But, like everything else, if you look for it, you can find it.

I recently learned about Congressman Tim Ryan.  He has a book out, Mindful Nation, which talks about bringing mindfulness (being present, quiet, slowing down, without judgement) into our daily lives, our institutions, and even into our political arenas.  That's him in the picture, bringing it into schools.

There is so much evidence for the value of mindfulness and he believes in it so much, that he has even managed to create a "Quiet Time Caucus" in the Congress, in the Speaker's Chapel.  For the first half hour of each week before voting time, they have "quiet time".  They can practice any form of mindfulness they want.  The only rule is they can't talk.  How cool is that?

Once a week, they also have a half hour for staff and have teachers related to mindfulness come in.  And, get this!  There is even a mindfulness-based practice being implemented over the next few years in the Marine Corps; and Tim is supporting getting EFT for Veterans since there is such strong evidence for it helping with PSTD.  (The Emotional Freedom Technique  uses tapping on meridian points to relax your system and thus allow your inner narratives and emotions to shift.)

Mindfulness is also practiced in corporations: Google, Proctor and Gamble, Target, General Mills, and more.

Just last month, there was the UPLIFT Festival in Australia, a global movement that celebrates the unity of spirit and matter and embraces the magic of love to transform the earth into a healthy, enlightened planet.  Hundreds of "big name"  participants revealed that a new world culture is being born in a new spiritual paradigm. 

As Bruce Lipton says when he refers to all of the current "crises", "bad news can actually be good news".  By this, he is referring to the Universal Cycle of Growth, where chaos precedes growth.  It happens in organizations, in nature, and in our personal lives; and it's happening on our planet.  Our planet and our world is transforming; and I fully believe it's in a positive way.

What are you aware of either "under the radar", or not, that is evidence of our planetary awakening and positive evolution? What's your relationship with Desire?

Joyful New Year greetings to you!

Last time I wrote to you I shared my deepest, heartfelt intentions for you.  I want to keep that momentum of possibility going by talking about DESIRE; because it's at the core of all potential and possibilities.

How many times have you envisioned or desired a different future for yourself in some regard than you are currently living?  Then what happened?  What did you DO with that desire?

Most of us are conditioned to have an uneasy relationship with desire.  We have automatic responses such as, "That's too hard" or "That's not possible for me" or "Why  bother" or That's too much money", and so on.  We reject and deny our desires, instead of honoring them as they should be.

Why should you honor your desires?  I believe they are your highest, greatest, Spirit-Self speaking to you.  You came here to create and expand with joy and ease.  It was your highest intention and purpose. 

Your desires are your Spirit, your Soul, wanting to EXPERIENCE, EXPRESS and CREATE through you.  And, this higher self knows it is all possible.  Only your smaller, limited thinking gets in the way and stops it.  With the right beliefs and the right strategies and skills, you can be, do and have what you desire, what your Soul desires.  Don't believe that?  Well then, that's the place to begin your work.

  • The next time you have a desire, know that this is a spiritual calling to be honored and taken seriously.

    If something doesn't seem right about the desire, like it conflicts with another desire or value, inquire into the positive intent underlying it.  What does it really want for you by having that desire fulfilled?  For example, desiring that bowl of candy? What experience are you actually hungry for?  Pleasure? Feeling relaxed? Energy? Something for YOU instead of for others all the time?  How can you more effectively and truly take care of that deeper desire? It's important!

    Now for the even bigger stuff.  I invite you to contemplate this question: "What do I want to be, do, have or experience in 2014?"  Write it out and answer it freely, with no limits and no judgments.  Take some relaxing time to do this.  Maybe put on some nice music; and open to the channel of your inner Soul speaking to you, and let it flow. 

    Connect as deeply as you can, in a space of quiet, peace, permission and possibility, and just ask and wait for guidance and inspiration for your role in fulfilling those desires.  You might find it easier to focus on one at at time. If limiting thoughts show up, just remember those are not your highest self speaking.  Take some deep breaths and listen to a different voice that might speak more softly.  It's there, ready to guide you to your next best action step towards having those desires fulfilled.  Be open to noticing it at any time, not just in contemplation.

Happy holiday and New Year greetings to you!

I hope you have been experiencing lots of good cheer and feeling the collective expansion of love that happens this time of year.

For my family, we've shifted away from isolating the holiday as a time for celebrating, generosity, abundance, love and joy; and instead bring it into our everyday way of being. Every day is a day to celebrate for me. I even wake up each morning saying, “I am happy for this day, and I expect good things. Surprise me Universe!” (Just like X-mas!)

With a new year upon us, I know a lot of you are probably doing some reflecting and thinking about what you want for yourselves. If you don't do this regularly, then this is certainly a good time to do it. I'd like to express Mark's and my ongoing heartfelt wishes and intentions for you, and let you know that we are here to support you in achieving them. I hope you'll feel inspired to hold these for yourself, as well.

  • That you get to know and feel the fullness and greatness of who you are

  • That you get to know and experience that you have everything you need inside you.  That not only are you good enough, you are perfect!  And, you are worthy of all that you desire, including being fully loved

  • That you listen to your inner brilliance and wisdom, that is always there for you

  • That you experience yourself as infinite love and joy

  • That you let go of your fears and “I can’ts” and all the beliefs that hold you back from being your best self and living your best life

  • That you’re able to see all the possibilities of your life and know that you have the power to create them with ease and joy

  • That you can knowingly declare, “I am not my mere thoughts and emotions. I am SO MUCH MORE”

  • That you stop complaining and perpetuating the stories that don’t serve you, and start creating and telling new stories that serve and empower you

  • That you experience emotional choice, and know how to shift out of negative moods and emotions to feeling good

  • That you live a life of ease and feeling happy!

  • That you listen to the deep calling of your Soul instead of the excuses for why not

Pleasure!  How it's important and how to have more

Joy-full greetings!

It's time to revisit the topic of pleasure, because I think we (especially women) tend to put it on the bottom of our priority list and discredit its importance.

Did you know that pleasure and feeling good are key components to being healthy, to having healthy relationships, to working more efficiently and effectively, even to being wealthy! 

Really, I wish doctors would prescribe it as a necessity, like taking your daily dose of vitamins, or eating well or exercising, or taking a prescription medication.  It's time to take your pleasure more seriously (ha ha).

Ever notice how little children follow their uncensored impulse towards pleasure
?  That's because it's in our inherent design.  Just like we need to eat and sleep, we need pleasure.  And when we're deprived of any of those, we suffer the consequences.  It is a basic need that you have an intrinsic capability for; and, when you fully allow yourself to follow it, you have infinite potential.

So, you might be wondering, if it's supposedly so natural and important, what happened? 

Here's a common scenario: You grew up and had responsibilities.  Survival and taking care of business took over, and you used those pleasure neural pathways less and less.  And, you know what?  If they're not used, they atrophy!  Your "pleasure muscles", so to speak, get out of shape; and it requires stronger and stronger external stimuli to feel good.  Thing is, this approach over-activates your dopamine; which then makes it harder and harder to experience pleasure!

The first step is to commit to having more pleasure in your life and to make it non-negotiable. "Doctor's orders!"

The next step is to take responsibility for rebuilding those intrinsic pleasure pathways by opening yourself to pleasure from within.  Set your intention to notice the pleasures in each moment. It's kind of like refining your palate to appreciate fine wines and healthy food versus processed foods that blast your taste buds with an overload of salt, fat, and sugar.

Pleasure is a moment to moment experience.  Here's an example of a pleasure "workout" to rebuild your pleasure pathways.  It's really just about doing what you already do, but doing it differently.

When you're home tonight, get comfortable and take a few mindful pleasure moments by just basking in the warm glow of light and the comforting feeling of home.  Really feel your space
and all of the positive aspects of it and all that you have to be thankful for in it.

When you eat your next meal, take in some pleasure by mindfully enjoying the smells and tastes.  Eat slowly and allow your pleasure to linger and last as long as you can.

As you settle into your winding down evening activity, make it really comfortable; and notice and appreciate it.  Do whatever you're doing with the intention
of pleasure and being your time to relax and treat yourself, even if it's watching TV.  Open up to all the pleasures available in your experience.

Possibilities for pleasure exist in every moment, in just about every experience, if you set your mind to notice it and live mindfully.  When you do this, pleasure will arise from within; and even the subtleties of life will feel good.

Cleaning out our garage and my ah-ha moment for you

A most beautiful New England Fall hello to you!

Over the summer, like most summers for us, our garage clutter got a little out of hand.  It was time to clean up and re-organize.  Yippee! ;-)

Without getting into details, this led to also cleaning up and re-organizing our basement.  Oh yeah...more fun!  One thing led to another and another.  We ended up also making some changes in our upstairs hallway, which even led to me cleaning out my sewing box!

It's amazing how things that felt so important to hold onto in the past now feel so irrelevant.  I had buttons saved to clothes we no longer even have, camping gear we no longer want, kitchen appliances I had saved for some kind of "you never know", kids games, and so on.  I'm sure you can relate in some way.  Take a look in your own basement and garage!  Without really looking, it all just falls into a background you get used to.

In the midst of all this, it occurred to me that the same phenomena happens with old beliefs and inner narratives we hold onto.  We get used to them and the unnecessary, excessive weight we're carrying around.  The thing is, like our basement, it's such a misuse of space, and it really holds us back from something better!  If you feel stuck or held back in some area of your life, most likely you have "old baggage" you need to let go of.

It felt SO freeing and good to let go of that old stuff that no longer served us, and to create new possibilities.  The basement that was once just a space for storage, is now our "creative arts studio" - a place for creative projects, exercise, music, yoga, and more.  It's such a better fit for who we are today and what we want to do with our lives.

New Possibilities for YOU!

Moving beyond this physical space analogy, what old, outdated beliefs and inner narratives might you be "storing" unnecessarily in the "basement" of your mind?  What might some mental housecleaning open up for you?

If you're interested, begin by starting to pay attention and raise your awareness.  Whenever you have some kind of undesirable feeling, this is your inner signaling system that you're telling yourself some story (inner dialogue) that has beliefs that limit you in some way or conflict with what you want.  Those beliefs might involve "rules" (shoulds and have-to's) that you haven't questioned.  Are they really a fit for you and your life today?  Or, they might doubt how capable or deserving you are of something, or how possible something is that you desire.

Here's a really easy step. Declare your willingness to change.  Say to yourself something like , "I am willing to believe (or learn) -x-."  or "I invite in a new perspective that will support me in -x- (what you want to do/how you want to be/feel, etc.)."  This opens up the possibility and sets the energy in motion.

Don't just accept these old beliefs and stories as "the truth", no matter how much they may seem that way.  Really challenge them!  Look for evidence to the contrary and for evidence that supports a more supportive belief.  Even ask others if you have to.  You'll be surprised and delighted with how ridiculous your old beliefs will become.

Sometimes we put this sort of mental housecleaning off because we just don't know where to begin or how, or it seems scary or overwhelming.  But, like cleaning out the garage, just start with one of the steps above.

How to have a really, really, really good day

A joy-filled good day to you!

I had the best summer ever!  It was filled with fun trips, good friends, outdoor beauty and fun, great food, wonderful surprises, generosity, love, and laughter.  Abundance, for sure.

So, did I have a great summer and feel really good because of those things; or did I get to experience all of those things because I was committed to feeling good no matter what?

I believe the answer is the latter.  Even when it wasn't the best of weather on our vacation to Martha's Vineyard, we focused on the positives and made it a good time.  And then, more good came to us.  Even when my plans for a weekend on the Cape fell through, I held that everything would work out well for me; and the very next morning, at 8:30 am,  a friend called saying she suddenly felt drawn to inviting us to spend time at their cottage on Long Island!  I could go on and on.

It's so easy to slip into the belief that how we feel is at the effect of what happens in our external lives.  But you do not have to be a victim to that.   I propose that, when you know how, it's easier to manage and control your internal world to feel good than it is your external world!  When you make that your first priority, and find ways to relax and feel good, then everything you desire unfolds more easily, including your actions.

New Possibilities for YOU!

  • Some of us believe that we are each God/Spirit in physical form, created by that non-physical life force to create, express, and experience as you.  You are both physical human and nonphysical God-Spirit.  Whether you believe this, or not; try on the thought.  What if you are God, an all-knowing, eternal, all-loving, non-judgemental force with infinite creative powers?  As that being, what would your perspective be on each of the life circumstances you're concerned about? Try it!  It really changes things.  And then remember that IS who you are!

Three necessary elements for getting where you are to where you want to be

A joy-filled hello to you!

Today I want to continue to talk about how to have breakthroughs that allow you to get from where you are to where you want to be. 


Because, as the saying goes, if you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always gotten (that's the jist of it, anyway).  And, we all have some area in which we want change and growth.  It's a good thing!

Are you familiar with Tony Robbins?  He's famous for leading people through firewalks and his Breakthrough seminars.  Although our styles are very different, we both use the personal change methodologies from NLP (neurolinguistic programming), and we both get the same stellar results. 

I love how he summarizes these three elements needed to create a personal breakthrough, or to accomplish what you want.  We teach and use these in all of our group and private coaching programs.  Here's what you need, in no particular order:

A strategy that's effective.  It might be a thinking strategy; and/or it might be something you do.  It's a plan or approach to accomplishing what you want.

Seems pretty basic.  Like, yuh, what else is new?  But are you using any strategies over and over even though they don't get you the results you want?  It's what we tend to do if we don't have any other choices.  So, if what you're doing isn't getting the results you want, maybe it's time to look for more options.
For example, are you trying to get thinner by eating less?  Is this alone working for you in a lasting way?  Changing behaviors is only one strategy, and usually not enough.  There are inner strategies, as well.

Then there are your inner stories, or narratives, which are made up of the thoughts and beliefs that will influence how you act (or not). They will determine if you use or even find a strategy that will work for you.

If you have thoughts like, "It's useless." or "It's too hard.", then your path to success is unlikely.  It's more likely to be hard and useless!

You also have to have an inner state that supports you.
This is about how you feel.  Obviously, if you feel overwhelmed, or fearful, or impatient, or unconfident, etc., it will affect how well you implement your strategies. 

New Possibilities for YOU!

In sum, you need the right strategies, stories, and states for any kind of success. 

Personally, I think you should focus on your story and state before even thinking about strategy. 

One way to change your state is to change your body.  Shift your posture, breathe deeply, move, or find a way to deeply relax.  This will allow your story to shift, which will create the opening for a strategy or at least researching or learning one. 

You can also change your state by becoming aware of your inner story, and changing it to one that supports you.  Talk to yourself like you would a good friend.  Or talk to yourself like an older, wiser you, or like someone you admire would speak.

Another way to change your state is to pretend you're in the state you want, and notice what story shows up.  This one is a little more challenging, in my opinion, but worth playing around with.  It can be easier if you remember a time when you felt the way you want, and then exploring the thoughts you were having that allowed it.


Of course, for any of this to happen, you have to be open and willing and aware.  Just set your intentions and begin playing with any of this.  If it's "too hard", then the best strategy is to get help or find resources to help you learn!  You know who to call!  :-)  Why delay what you want any longer?  E-mail me at [email protected].

In case you haven't already figured this out through experience, it's not necessarily the best strategy; and it's certainly not the only strategy.

I firmly believe, and experience shows, that approaching weight loss by dealing with the inner issues that led to being overweight and that create the struggle with losing it, is the way to go. You need to address strategies, stories, and states, at the very least.
